Many of the changes in recent years have originated from directives given by the European Community. It is vital that an employer ensures that he has in place all the necessary contracts for his employees and that these contain all the details that are now required.

The contract of employment performs a vital role in protecting the position of the employer should disputes/ difficulties arise. The employer must also follow all the correct procedures and act reasonably. To achieve this, formal procedures must be prepared beforehand and communicated to employees so that the employer can clearly show he has acted both correctly and fairly. Failure to do so can make a dismissal unfair and any such failure alone can increase the compensation by up to 50%.
